I changed the seating in the classroom to give the students more room between the tables and chairs, and was amazed that such a small detail could have such a positive change to the class.

I have found that students sitting in the back row think it gives them immunity from classroom
rules and regulations such as cell phone/texting etc. I like to announce that "the back row has several defective seats" when asked what is wrong with them, I reply that sometimes they result in lower classroom grades and professionalism infractions - they get the hint.
I also like the idea of sitting in the student seats to get their feel of the room.

I mix up the students seating and promote team work for lab tasks

The students should be able to select their seat in a class. The shy or very quiet student probable will select a seat towards the back of the room. Others, that are more out spoken may select a seat in the front of the class. It is good to include all the student in the topic by creating an activity the includes everyone. Mix them up, they will get to know others in the class.

Hi Daniel!

Please define a good student verses a bad student?!?!?!? I would encourage all instructors/facilitator to not have preconceived notions or label students. I really do understand the point you are making here, but we really have to try to put ourselves in student's shoes.

I make the statement that we have all been down the same path, we just leave different footprints.

Thanks for taking my remarks kindly and keep up the good work!
