prop use

using props is good for the learners, stimulates their ability to associate with the topic

Something I usually struggle with but will definitly read on it more so I could incorporate for optimal learning.

I teach culinary, so visual aids are so important to my daily lecture. I include anything from specific pieces of equipment, to exotic spices, ingredients to proteins and produce. Since most of my students are visual learners this really help them.

Most of my students are visual learners so I find using visual examples to help them understand better. I show them how to put something together take it a part then have them do it .

I can see things "click" with my dental hygiene students when I use props...its like it all falls into place.

I enjoy using props and other multisensory items in the classroom. It really brings things home for the students. I also often use those props to create challenges. For example, when my students are learning about critical thinking hats a person uses, I have each of the students take a different hat from my pile and wear it and they have to try to stay within the role that their hat says. In team building, I have students take an egg and tape and have to build a structure that won't break if dropped on the sidewalk. Also, with music, I bring in a song by Della Reese called "The Games People Play" after having the students play the Red/Black game to really drive home the meaning of the game.

All,
I love using props in the classroom. It is especially useful for the type of student that needs that "hands on" experience.

It does require quite a bit of preparation but it is worthwhile in the long run.

as a chef instructor showing all the details not just the obvious while using a knife and really demonstrating proper mechanics is invaluable to the learner. I remember being a student and watching my old chef instructor and how he showed every detail while talking about why he was doing things in a step by step process.

I pass around dead coral when discussing coral reefs in class and how they are being bleached out.

I often color my props with wild and bright colors to enhance the classroom

I also use training aids alot it helps me explain things that the learner can't visualize

Hi Dennis!

I bet you are a visual, see it, touch it learner yourself? I am and often use the same strategies but I have to remind myself that I must consider other learning styles as well. Than can be difficult for me.

Keep up the good work!

Prop use or training aids as I call them are very important in my class.although some of my students are visual learners, some must see and touch the item you are trying to explain in order to understand how it works.I dont think I could teach the class without them.
