Color and Music in the Classroom
I love color and I love music. I try to wear a hint of red on Mondays because I believe I will start my week on a cheerful tone. I wear colorful scrubs to wake up my students and set a happy mood.
Students notice the different colors that I wear. They say it brightens their days. I use different colors to correct homeworks and tests so they do not feel bad if they make a mistake. I would seldom use red pen to mark their work.
I would even put a smiley face if they get a 100%. Anything just to brighten their day.
I love music. I would like to have music in the classroom because I know students will do better if there is a background music that will reduce stress on a very busy day.
I believe that music could be essential tool to increase effectiveness of classes..., but not ANY music. I would use classical music or blues and always as a background ONLY.
I totally understand the concept of color and music, but never really thought that it could be implemented in the classroom setting. I am very impressed how you use colors in your teaching. You are very in tune with colors and I can see that it will and does affect your students. I would like to implement this into my teaching style as I begin developing my teaching.
like your idea of wearing something especially bright and happy on Mondays.

color and music for sure will enhance the classroom, its especially good on the clinic floor with my cosmetology students. they like the use of color to help remind them of their color charts that they learn to do hair with, and the music is calming during potentially stressful times of doing a clients hair for the first time!
Marlo, I completely agree with you about using colors and smiley faces on tests/home work to brighten students days. If I don't have anything bright/colorful to wear, I wear bright nail polish and all my students comment on it (even male students). I am a massage therapy instructor and our building always has soft relaxing music playing, but I have started incorporating music with a little faster tempo only because massage music tends to be over calming (if that's possible). The use of color and music in the class room not only makes that day smoother for my students but also for myself!
I was really interested to read about the use of color in the classroom. I always thought that people were affected by color and the study sited reaffirmed that feeling. Most interesting about this is that they just rennovated our local elementary school and they painted the walls in each classroom 4 different virant colors - red blue yellow and green... my daughter comes home with a headache and is easily distracted......wonder if the color choice is a factor???
I also agree that color and music can enhance the learning process; I believe that color and graphics can make hand-outs more effective. Attractive and effective color in the learning environment can encourage learning. The proper use of color and music in the classroom can put the student in a frame of mind wher they will learn more effectively
i like color they make the feeling in the room and music it helps them learn
I've always suspected that music, at low levels, could be an effective tool in motivating learning. I wish that I could get hold of some of the music used in NFL high-lites to play at a low level when doing demonstrations or during periods when the students are working on projects
I do wear different colored clothing, but regretfully without much variation. I am trying to think of the clothing that others wear, and how it affects me, and I think that I prefer earth tones, which helps me to feel calm. I had a dentist once who wore brightly colored Hawaiian shirts, and it caused a lot of anxiety for me.
The classroom that I am using now is actually a massage room, so we have canned music that I could potentially use. That said, when I first began using the room, I didn't know how to control the volume, and on those occasions when it was left on, the students always said that it was distracting. Generally, I am lecturing, or we are having lively discussions, so perhaps it may not be the best use of music at that time. I know that when I am studying, music helps me tremendously.

I too love using music and color in my class. I think it helps the students learn, helps them stay attentive, and keeps them motivated.
I was glas to learn in this section of the course how what I have been doing has been studied by experts and that I am on the right track for enhancing my student's learning.
