Music always helps?

fast up beat musci can also help

I would like to try music in the classroom. I think it could be very stimulating and motivating. Unfortunatly, it is not allowed where I teach.

I also use music during labs, it seems to motivate the students and keep them on task. I would go so far as to say it helps them with maintaining a calm but motivated mood.

Sharron,
Thank you so much for sharing this information & research. It's also good to know that you are incorporating this into your own instruction.

Years ago I read the book Super Learning. 60 beat per minute music was being used to increase learning in Europe. People who learned a new language while sitting in comforatable chairs and lisening to this speed music, which is associated with the alpha music in this lesson, increased learning in about 1/3 the time. I always have classical music playing in my library

I know music always helps me. I think it helps the brain & also can help block out other noises/distractions so we are better able to focus. Sometimes silence is more distracting than noise.

I would try that but only after class production is finished, during cleaning time it could motivate them and make the cleaning task more easy and faster to finish...

I agree. Music in the classroom does energize the students and the results from their projects and quizzes are better. I remember when a teacher I had in college played a record and at first we though that was weird, but after a while I didn't notice it as much and was working faster and coming up with ideas quicker.

I agree, with the not during testing or lecture the mind seems to wonder off and the students loose focus

Music is a great way to feel relaxed when studying and completing assignments. I personally function a lot better when music is in the background while Im completing my assigned tasks. I am sure the students will benefit from soft music playing just as much.

I agree that there is a time and place for music. It is not good when testing, and of course during a lecture.

I have always noticed that when I have music on in the background, whether it is when I am working or when I am in the classroom, I work better, and the students are more alive and engaged in the lab.

I have to disagree. I had a college instructor play classical music during test. She read that this music helped increase test scores. I found this to be very distracting since I do not like this sort of music. Todays student is not the traditional student anymore. So with music and age of students, this may be a a conflict.

I use music during lab/hands on projects.

Music should be judiciously used in a classroom environment because it can easily become a distraction for the students. Choosing the type of music is critical for successful implementation.

Music stirs The emotions of a person and therefore can have a positiv effect on students learning.

I can see how the proper type of music being played can enhance a learning enviroment.

Some of the students are so used to background noise that the playing of music during in-class activities seems to help them stay focused.

I agree. I use upbeat , instrumental music often in my classes during various times and activities. Without words to distract them, the students seem to be enlivened and still able to focus on the task at hand. Of course the volume is low.
