Seating

I use seating that promotes teamwork. It is an important component in their field of study. It promotes success in the classroom and cohesion among classmates.

I allow the students to sit whereever they want for the first few weeks (3-4 wks), then I provide a seating chart after I have learned their patterns ie who prefers the front or back, who likes to sit together etc.. I like to mix the students up so that they learn to work with people "outside of their comfort zone".

I use this same concept. Our desk are arranged in small sideways U shapes throughout the classroom. This seating designs helps facilitate team cohesion and intermittent group discussion during lectures.

Tim,
yes, this is one of the best ways to get to know your students especially if you are teaching a larger class.

Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

I initially use it to remember the names of the students. But then force them to move their seating to avoids click type environments and forces the students to interact out of their comfort zone.

I use a seating chart to get to know the person better by name association.

I really had no idea how important seating is to the learning environment. I was so used to the lecture hall, stack them in, classroom. I now move the tables and chairs around to accommodate what the subject matter may be. The students are having fun with the prospect that every day may bring something different.
