debriefing

I tried the debriefing of a field trip we have taken after I did this part of the module. It worked out really well and students point of view was much different from what I had expected. Overall it was a fruitful experience. I am going to continue to do that in the future.

Hans,
this is very true. We need to develop a good list of questions with which we can engage the students & really cause them to think.

Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

Debriefing after a presentation should always be done to recap and ask questions from both the instructor and students on the subject that was just covered.

Hi Mark!

Debriefing works especially well if class objectives have been posted and discussed at the beginning of each class. It keeps the class on track and provides a focal point for debriefing as well.

Keep up the good work!

I try to use debriefing after every class. I ask the student how they thought the day went and if needed what could be changed. I seem to get more question at the end of the day than the start.

I believe that debriefing is an effective way to follow up on learning opportunities. In a classroom setting, it is a means for others to learn as well on the feedback from other students.

I like to use both a verbal debriefing during class time to discuss issues as well as having students then journal debriefing responses as well. If class time runs short at least the student will have the ability to realize some of the outcomes that occurred during the learning session.

Hello Chad,
I agree with you. Debriefing, feedback, or review whatever is decided on is crucial. In the kitchen mastering the art of delivering critical feedback is key.

I believe the opportunity to debrief after an exercise and reiterate the learning process for the student. They will see more value in the exercise after describing what they learned and did not learn. They will see the whole picture and better appreciate the efforts of the activity.

I agree completely. I teach a computer lab and have found the a debriefing, especially at the end of a class where a lab spreads across 2 classes, tends to give me a better benchmark by judging the questions ask and gives the students a reinforcement of where they should be.

have found that debriefing off and on throughout lab has given me a way too check learning progress

I have my students write a reflection paper as part of their final test in our service learning class. I tell them ahead of time that they will have to write about the class and how they can apply what they learned from their project to their profession and personal life. I give them questions ahead of time to help them start thinking about the kinds of things that I want them to reflect upon. I have had many positive surprises about their experiences!

This is very true. To look back at what the students have done and discuss it allows them to think about what could have done differntly about what they have learned.

Hi Chad!

I totally agree that feedback is important. It is best if it occurs immediately after the instruction so that the material is fresh in the students' mind and if they have questions those can be answered immediately.

Good job!

I think a feedback section after a activity is a great tool. It allows the learners to voice how the activities are beneficial and what could be done to improve the content.

The term "debriefing" is a more modern name for the artistic version of a "Critique"; which I believe is derived from the French "to criticize". you need to look at any job, situation, learning experience and be able to look at it from a fresh perspective with the help of others that has shared similar experiences to appreciate how one can do the same exercise better the next time around.

I work with a dozen professionals that teach with me and one of the greatest learning experiences I have ever had is being "debriefed" by my peers; this is witnessed by our students who so badly wish to runt eh gauntlet and make the passage from student to peer by having their work critiqued by everyone and anyone.

I really like the idea of debriefing following a field trip, so that as instructors we find out what the students have learned and how a similar field trip could be more effective the next time. I think it would be advantageous to plan an assignment following the field trip that would illustrate how effective the field trip was or was not in increasing the students' kinesthetic, auditory, or visual learning, or all of the mentioned learning types, based upon the written or visual results of the assignment.
