Games in the classroom
What type of games will motivate student
learning?
Roosevelt,
yes, the games can be a great learning tool, especially for reviewing before exams.

I have done this and it really works. The students test scores have increased.
Danella,
these are really great suggestions & ideas. Thanks for sharing.

I use a variety of games for quiz and test reviews such as: Are you smarter than a 5th grader?; Hollywood Squares; Millionaire; Ask Louie; etc. and then Password is usually a great game for terms/definitions
Julie ,
games really do help students to review in a fun way & help with retention as well.

I have had luck with Jeopardy type game for learning muscles in the massage program- students need to formulate questions that get them to review the muscles in Jeopardy (e.g. "this muscle attaches to ischial tuberosity and extends the hip") Also, "name that muscle"- with student involvment- students quizzing each other, pointing to a muscle on their body, generates alot of energy when done in a group.
I agree. I think games help to prepare the student in a sort of review of the test. They can gage how much more they need to study by how well they do on the game. Of course this is not always a good indicator but it does give them somewhat of an idea.
Yes, but is the game "giving away" the answers to the test? Many times students do not study to learn the information, but rely on review activities and short-term memory to pass the test.
I have found that word search or scavenger hunt type games are helpful in getting students to learn and retain the terminology of a particular topic.
Tom,
Thank you for sharing this great activity.

Great prep game for a vocabulary test where each team takes turn sending individual to stand with back to board. A term is written on the board and the team members must brainstorm clues to give without using the word itself. The team has one minute after which they lose their turn if their member doesn't guess correctly. At this point the next team will then get to send someone from their team to the board.
Melanie,
I have found that it helps cement the concepts in the minds of students or helps them identify areas where they need to spend more time in studying.

I think that playing games before test and quizzes could really help a lot of students to pass test.
milagros,
Great question, do you have any games that you find motivate student learning?
