Simulation in a chalk talk class room
While my program is primarily lecture, I watch my students carefully for frustration with the coursework, lack of interest, the usual suspects that we have to deal with that are part of the "new generation" of students.
What I started to do, is encorporate the LO into the "talk", and have the students go right into hands on as part of their class work. It sinks the LO in and gives them that break that they need to reset.
Also do I think asking question of students to engage team talk. I find involving the student encourages a challenge they don't even know they are getting into. I like to ask questions that are not necessarily beneath them but something I know they can answer. Question cannot be that challenging or they won't participate.
laura,
and the discussions that can be generated in this manner can be a great way for all of us to learn more.

I completely agree. If I'm in a lecture situation, I typically ask the students questions to spur conversation then let them basically lecture for me.
James,
yes, when we can break up the lecture or the "talk" it does help reengage the learner & their attention.
