I also use powerpoint with my lecture, most students won't look in their book like we expect to, so by using powerpoint they seem to be more engaged. It also allows us to point things out as key topics.
I also use power point, the visual along with my voice makes for a better lecture.
I also do the same. Powerpoint and the white board.
Charles,
this is a great idea & should really help to enhance your lessons.

I do the some. I us pictures that a have collected in the field and in lab to show what the power-point is trying to say. And I am thinking of taking some drawing lessons because a lot of my use on the white board is drawing pictures of how the things work on the inside.
Paul,
the U or horseshoe is one of the most effective seating arrangements for presentation of material & discussion.

The course I deal with involves student's access to a computer and lots of class discussion/participation. We have found it best to have the students sit in a U-shape configuration. This allows the student to face each other The instructor off to the side of the class in front to facilitate the flow of the discussion
Stephen,
good question. First of all, don't feel like you have to use power point, if you are being effective without it, keep going. There are some basic web tutorials that you could watch that don't take much time at all & then from there, power point is pretty intuitive to use & as you have questions you could probably just ask a peer. Hope that helps.

I am really embarrassed, but I totally do not know how to create or put-together PowerPoint presentations AT ALL. Where/what is the best way to acquire this skill if one is a very very busy teacher that doesn't have a great deal of time to take a course?
Freddie,
completely agree; powerpoint should be used as an aide, not the primary means of communicating the material.
Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Using PowerPoint is good. However the instructor should not be totally reliant on that teaching style. In doing so, other learning styles will be missed. Therefore, other learners will not get the best opportunity to learn the lesson.
James,
This is a great idea especially for subjects involving the diagrams, etc.

I also use a Powerpoint as one of my visual aids. I like to take small breaks and do group activities, individual activities and classroom discussions in between every 6-8 slides.
I try to limit my use of Power Point. Most of my students are in the trades. Death by power point loses them quickly.
I use PowerPoint in my class. I like to also use the white board for drawing. That mix's things up and keep it interesting.
I like to project power point on top of the white board, this way I can write or draw on the white board to further enhance the power point slide.
powerpiont can be used to keep class subjects organized.
Debbie,
this is a great example of using a wide variety of approaches/ideas to help communicate the information & help the students keep their ideas clear.

I also use a combo of power point and whiteboard, and also video. I like to have willing students use the whiteboard to demonstrate what they are learning ie: drawing a white blood cell. I also use power point as games. The students have to guess what the picture is ie: cell identification or finish the phrase. Teams work well for this.
gerald,
yes the visuals are very powerful & when we can include the pictures/diagrams it's great.
