debriefing
REFLECTING on the content with the students is a great way to assure them they are retaining information.
The information on debriefing was very helpful to me. Like many, I realized I was short cutting this completion exercise, not realizing that this is where the transfer of knowledge occurs. I will plan more carefully to have good discussion and evaluation and be sure not to run short on time. Very informative. I enjoyed and learned qite a bit in this module.
Maybe I'm stuck in the lecture/note taking mode but how do students take notes to review from this type of activity? do they write your debriefing questions down and answer them as they are reviewed?
Dawn,
and this also helps them on the tests as it forces them to think in these terms earlier on.

I think that the debriefing is a valuable step but often left out due to lack of time. It is like a mini review for the student and gives them a chance to connect the main concepts. After a PowerPoint lecture I will sometimes show a You Tube video that is a review of the information that was just covered. Hearing the information a second time, in a different format is often times very beneficial for the students.
One way I utilize debriefing is to have them write test questions with the answers either in a group or individually. Then you can also tailor this to make a game which includes movement or simulations. They love being involved in "test writing".

Absolutely James I even ask the student during the weld demo what were the parameters to set there machine and how would the go about doing the weld. I would proceed from there making any corrections and seeing what the retained in class.
Tony,
it really is a great way to solidify the learning that has just occurred.

I never thought of the term debriefing. it sure is an excellent way of reinforcing what has been covered in the class room and also out in the lab..I will use more in my teaching of students.
I did this quite a bit when I first began teaching. It is an excellent way to not only gauge how much the students are learning, but also how effective your teaching styles are. It takes a considerable amount of trial and error to become a successful teacher. You just need to be receptive to your students and flexible with your methods and delivery.
Angela,
these are excellent debriefing questions that can really help us identify where to improve.

I like this aspect of the learning tree.
when I teach and use this tool I like to use the structure of the game "Clue" They not only have to find the main content but also the sub content that completes the material such as Mr Mustard in the kitchen with the knife.... My class like this form of debriefing and it stimulates the "W",s questions such as Why, when, where etc.
I totally agree, asking what did you like best, what would you do differently are also good debriefing methods
Mark,
excellent emphasis on BUILDS as this is an important step often overlooked or forgotten & then the content seems disjointed.
Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Yes, review the activity or learning in the next class and then do an activity which BUILDS on the one before.
Dan,
I personally believe that debriefing is one of the most important & useful, yet overlooked, tools we have at our disposal.
Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
So far, debriefing is the most useful thing I've read in the course so far. I'm certain this will work very well in my class. I can't believe this has never occured tome before.

I love this idea of simulation and debriefing. I have not used this technique yet and am excited to try it.
Screenwriting requires a nuts and bolts understanding, and then student is on their own to create their own script. Its almost a self working debrief.
