Retention

What I have found is that student retention has been very poor. Students can't remeber day to day, ley alone something they need to know as per working for a living.

When someone is falling behind or I can see a lack of motivation, I try to inspire them with their own work or previous actions. Reminding them of the challenge brought on by their completed assignment and the feeling they got once it was completed.

my culinary students must have pride in making everything they do and...absorbing & connecting the dots for future culinary precision knife skills & tasks. They are ultimately pleased with what they do & that keeps em comin back for more!

I think it is important to remind students why they are learning something. I often find if they feel that the information is valuable they are more likely to retain the information. Also, they have to use it, or they will loose it. I like to do class openers in the beginning of every session to have my student build their skills and use what they learned in the previous classes.

Pride seems to be the greatest motivation for students. When someone is falling behind or I can see a lack of motivation, I try to inspire them with their own work or previous actions. Reminding them of the challenge brought on by their completed assignment and the feeling they got once it was completed. They always feel proud of themselves when comlpleting a challenge and they want this good feeling to continue throughout the rest of their career. I'm trying to inspire them by being a reminder of their pride...

i have not used games yet, but i am eager to try.

I make it a class rule that all students contact me directly and let me know if they will be late or absent from class. this helps a lot

I believe that when delivering the content as an instructor, one could make reference to different situations where the content would be useful and relevant so that the informations could be retained easier.

I also play games with the students. This realy works.

I let the students know that pride in the work that they are doing is a good thing, and later after the school experence this same pride will become easy and fun because of the time they took in school. It well pay off in the long run.

i some times play games with inportant information this helps them remember inportant information.

I could not have said it better my self. the biggest challenge is there a wide span of your target audience from the young to the older learners all in the same class.but you can still teach to them all by being aware of there likes dislikes attatude and persanalaty and incorperateing that into the info being provided. that will make them feel as if your teaching to them as an Individual. always keep fun in the equation

Bravo Steve! I would love to be a student in your classroom.

Vinie… Vinie…. Being a instsructor is being a sales person of knowledge and the pursuit of knowledge. You have to look at your target audience and figure out how to make what you’re selling desirable and relevant to them. This may sound detached and without inspiration but in my experience it really is true. Get to know your class and, this may be controversial and it’s definitely not necessary as we all know, but if you can, get your class to like you. Not by leniency or by pretending to be something your not but with sincerity and honesty and by not taking yourself too seriously. If you can coax that magical combination of respect and sincere fondness for you out of some or, we can only hope, all of your class something great happens—they want to please you. And if what pleases you is participation and effort, you will find it much easier to get that from your class when that relationship of respect and fondness occurs. You will not necessarily get specific results from each student but you will find you can communicate more effectively.

Yes, indeed...retention is a major concern for me too. Students can remember what a Movie said or did...but can't remember what they need to do to make a good living:-(
