ESL-Visual Aids

Many dont know that ESL (English as a Second Language) can be supported greatly through visual aids! Students may not always understand that verbal content and the visuals can be a way to provide connection to an otherwise foreign concept.

Hi Norma!

You make a very valid. Not only is it important to teach the English language but to know something about the student's culture so they don't get lost in the translation.

Keep up the good work!

The interpetation may change the meaning from one language to another

How true! I am also an ESL instructor and visuals are used very often to teach new vocabulary. I also incorporate PowerPoints using funny sketches with colorful visuals to drive home a particular point of grammar.

Juliet, I agree. In fact, I think that visual cues help learning any language. A number of years back, I was learning the Thai alphabet. The children's book I had was basically just a visual aid. Embedded in the name of each consonant in the Thai alphabet is a word that begins with that letter. A picture of that word was next to the symbol that represented that consonant. I found it much easier to retain the names of the letters of the alphabet now that I had a word to associate with each one of them. I am sure that for your ESL students, visual cues -- matching the vocabulary words -- is of great help in their learning.

Christopher

I think a picture is worth a thousand words. In teaching automotive, many concepts are easily explained with a picture then with lecture. No matter if the student is ESL challenged or not.

i would believe that, many of our terms have no translation to latin languages.
