Retention
I like using aids for retention such as index cards, different color highlighters and PP printouts. Any other ideas?
I think giving real life examples of sucess storys as in former students helps them to relise that they too can do it.
Motivation is critical in retention....therefore I advised the student to go out and treat themself to a new study instrument at the mid point of that module. New writing instruments or a new binder, as a add to insprie them to keep focused and not loose the excitment placed in a new start.
I agree. The first week of every module, I ask my new students why they decided to pursue a career as a Medical Assistant. Each comment is written down on a postcard. When our students loose sight of their goals and dreams, a postcard is sent to them to remind them of their why. This method helps us retain a lot of our students. Most importantly, updated postcards are needed because through the course, some students reach their initial goal and new ones are needed to be made to help them stay focus.
I'm a big fan of mnemonics to help students grasp dififcult concepts. Anything they perceive as a shortcut helps them!
Hi Jacky!
So very important to keep students focused on learning. But equally important is make them feel like they are part of the clssroom learning experience.
Good job!

Keeping students interested and focused on learning is a sort of retention. if student struggles and does not get help,he/she will not progress. Therefore the output will be mediocre, and teacher himself will not be satisfied.
I have tried games like Jeopardy ,Clue etc.or a movie pertinent to the material i am teaching
It is a great idea to remind students how their education can improve their lives. Sometimes their daily problems are so bad they want to give up but reminding them how their education can change their life is important.
Hi Michael!
I like the idea! My experience with students is that they like games and the competition that accompines them. I like to have prizes for both winning and losing teams. I get things that they can use in school - pencils, pens, paperclips, etc.
Keep up the good work!

Flashcards are one of the training aids I have been considering. Maybe even setting it up to be a game in small groups.
I find the best way to retain data is through the rehearsing it as if I will give a class. By teaching we learn twice.
Hi Charles!
I certainly think that reminding students is important, but even better, is demonstrating and role modeling a thirst for learning. I'm not sure students are as interested in how other lives have been improved as they are about how their lives will improve. Retaining students is a delicate balance between personal desire, work ethic and realization that learning is a life-long process.
Keep up the good work!

Power points work very well for my teaching process. Students actually look forward to being able to take notes on the same document. I use the 3 slide to a page format with areas to the right which provide space for student note taking. They can take notes about the instructor's correlation between personal experiences and textbook material. According to student feedback, this is helpful in the retrieval process upon studying for exams.
reminding students of why they entered into the learning process and letting them understand how an education has improved the lives of people around them.
