memorizing
it is good to help students memorize things through simulation
I like this idea. Using task to complete in my theory class has been helpful. And having student link it to their lives.
Yes, I second that. I teach high level heart and kidney A & P (at least my student think it’s so). Some recall is needed first, concepts next.
I agree. I encourage my students not to memorize. I also give quizzes and tests that require critical thinking as opposed to just memorizing an answer
many times, i have my own mnemonics for anat/phys sections. as a homework or in class when they need a break, we'll have everyone come up with a mnemonic and share it. it reinforces the terms for the individual and some "click" with other classmates, plus, if there is a good one, it can be incorporated into later classes.
FYI: specify that it has to be "G or GP" rated!
Memorization is often a necessary part of the learning process. I like to offer students tricks and mnemonic devices to assist in recalling vital information
I feel that students memorize by demonstrating what was taught. They will understand the information better and see the importance of what was taught.
In some contexts it is neccessary for training, As long as the why is explained and understood.
Yes, I insist on the students memorizing key terms prior to a lecture, as they seems to recall and understand the lecture better.
In my experience, working in a technical field, there is some memorization that is required before any theory can be applied. For example, students need to know the names of each part of the heart to understand how the heart functions. They also can't understand the disease process in a particular organ unless they know the anatomy and function of the organ.
I think that memorization and theory go hand-in-hand in many situations.
Hi Kim!
I basically agree! Maybe the better terms are repeat, repeat, practice, then repeat.
Thanks for that reminder.
Keep up the good work!

Memorizing is very important at some point or the other. Nowadays, students are fortunate to have computing and telecommunication devices perform most of the memory work. Students are less burdened with committing loads of terminology to memory as scientific calculators, cell phones, PDAs, to mention a few are pre-programmed with formulas, equations etc. aiding the computing and learning process.
Memory work cannot be totally eliminated from the learning process. Think of when a child starts to learn the ABCs. There are no two ways around it such as trying to understand why A comes before B and so on. It is pure memory work. The same applies to terminology in new concepts a student learns. At some point in time after constant interaction and use of the terminologies we unintentionally save the information to our subconscious and subsequently stored in our memories. Did memory work take place? Yes. Were we aware? Possibly not. In my opinion, whether we memorize through repetition or save information to be learned onto a memory device for future retrieval, memory work does take place at all levels of learning.
Memorizing is not a measurement of knowledge. Students will need to demonstrate an understanding of the material.
Hi Charles!
I totally agree! Memorizing along with repetition and practical application is an excellent teaching tool.
Keep up the good work!

I agree that hands on use of a skill is a very good way to learn.
Have found that memorization in a context is most helpful. Recitation of the order and activities involved in the assembly and disassembly of complex mechanisms while assembling/disassembling such mechanisms greatly assists memory and retention. Tying certain steps to mnemonic devices further enhances retention of information by adding to the framework or context of the task.
memorizing will not help the student much in the real world if they don't understand the basics.
Other replies seem to automatically dismiss memorizing. It is appropriate in some instances!
Writing the learning objectives for the day on the board and discussing this at the start of class is vital.
I was wondering the same thing, to memorize Does the student have to be intrested in the info?
