Positive Inforcement, Breeds Positive Reinforcement

If you expect your class to do well on their lessons, you have to speak positivity to them. Stay away from negative verbs.

I try to get the idea that education is a share effort with the students. However, I too, deal with students who still do not do the homework etc. The biggest boost for me was to take the students outside of the classroom so they can see how the material covered in class is relevant in the real world. Bringing speakers into the classroom, also, helps.

I, also, learned that I will totally lose a student if I provide negative feedback. I constantly work to provide positive feedback. Sometimes, I ask the students to try or re-do the assignments so they can see a before and after effect.

Students are motivated by grades and if you can convey the importance of following the steps that will lead to a succesful project and a high grade in the end. This way they will start to understand that following those steps are the buliding blocks and reason to practice patience.

I always try to positively affirm my students, even if the answer they give is wrong. I may tell them that they are close ar that they are on the right track. I also like to try and help them recall on thier own the correct answer without me telling them what it is outright.

Chef, i can completely feel for you and often times i run into the same senario with some of my students. My solution is to have them analyze each step in detail and ask them where they think they went wrong. In the end they will admit that it was their fault by not taking detailed notes, which makes them understand how their grades for the day has impacted their performance for the day. As soon as they realize how important the outcomes are they soon get onboard like everyone else producting quality products.

When the students proficiency is a correctly finished product, (e.g. baked piece of pastry) the product turned in was a disaster. The student did not take any notes during the demo, did not read the homework assignment, did not scale or mix the ingredients properly, did not watch the product in the oven. How do you give positive inforcement? This student feels that she in entitled to a good grade because she came to class.
