Retention
Retention through memory is very hard. I try and explain to students that memorizing answers just for the sake of "test" is invalid. Learn the material thoroughly before memorizing. Learn it to where you can explain your answers in your own words to where it makes sense. This way you are learning it for future use,and not just for the present test.
Yes, it is true. I have this problem with my students. They try to memorize results instead of how to solve a problem. That's why I ask them to show me the work, not only the final result. No work, no points.
Some students may progress in one of the above more than others. This is why a combination of the above should be used to help students retain the material taught in class
Repetition is the key in retaining information to memory.
Also, there are different forms of learning. i.e visual, listening, and practical.

Raquel,
this is very true. Memorizing random facts before a test or quiz will not help them in the long run, they must secure it in long-term memory.

I've advised students to learn by studying and repetition. Memoring for the moment is not the best way to learn.
Hi Elizabeth
I always try to keep my energy level up and offer lots of activities to keep the students interested. It seems to be a very effective method.
Kimberly,
these little mini-breaks really are helpful & I like to come back from them by asking a question that is related to previously covered material.

It's difficult for students today to devote the time required to be very successful in the classroom. Everyone seems to live in the multi-tasking world. I take several breaks in my classroom to try to apply what was just discussed. It seems to help everyone to stay focused. The practice also allows me to assess my students frequently without them really knowing. It's a great way to keep everyone engaged and moving forward.
I try and review in my classes as much as possible. I also have a unique ability in my subject matter to contantly link things together throughout the whole course of their schooling, not just in one class, but going through the whoel program. This aspect is very god for students, especially those who were never 100% comfortable with "traditional" school.
sultana,
yes, the experiential learning & ability to practice with immediate performance feedback is important.

Retention through memorizing is difficult for the adult learner. One have to learn the subject and apply practical application
You need to have a desire to learn the materials presented in order to properly retain them. Quite often unfortunately in the modern educational system, most of the things being taught really are fluff and, in my opinion, a waste of time and educational funds. It's kind of hard to truly remember something you do not want to learn in the first place....
