Module 4
I learned from this module that people will often retain information better if they can link some importance to it in everyday life. As an instructor it is my job to help them make this link.
Robert,
absolutely true! If we can show the application the students will be much more engaged.
Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Yes I agree, if you can relate how the student can use this they will retain much more. I can remeber a high school geometery topic on slope. This did not make any sense because I could not see any reson I needed this info as the instructor did not relate it to life. But upon reading more i discovered a good way to relate was with topo maps as slpoe is used to measure distance. Wow!, if we can do this in our classes what a difference it will make.
Whenever you can relate something to your own life experience it then becomes apart of you and your own memory.
I too think retention is greatly improved when applied to everyday life. The field I teach makes it easy to first apply in reverse sequence, thus retention greatly improves. When they first see how it is applied the links in the brain better respond when they then hear it again. This is a techique I use whenever possible.
