Retention

Making fun and interesting is help student retention.

Thomas,
yes, the students can learn so well from our own mistakes.

Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

I do the same thing. I also like to tell my "horror" stories from the industry. This is to help them understand that although I'm the instructor I am not perfect and making mistakes is a normal part of the learning process.

I always do a meet & greet the first day & We all get to know eachothers interests & I find it often connets students through sharing info that they otherwise may have never found out about eachother

very true. we play music and dance sometimes to lighten the mood. they love it

you set the tone for how the class will be as soon as you enter the classroom

Many adult students are very nervous about returning to school. Adding some fun stuff to the class helps them feel more comfortable.

Loretta,
when students really feel like they are "getting it" & retaining the information they need to, they will be much more excited & ready to engage in learning everyday.

Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

Yes it does because it make learning exciting, and it makes excited to come every day.

Betty,
and this creativity can help encourage the students with their creative thinking & problem solving.

Instructors thinking outside the box is great for the learning environment and greatly impacts student learning outcomes and retention.

Greg,
yes, while we would never sacrifice content or material for "entertainment" we do have an obligation to really engage the learners with the material.

If the student is engaged and enlightened he or she will be more likely to stay in school and be eager to learn. As a teacher sometimes you have to think outside the box to educate the student and find different ways of learning in the classroom.

I agree, if your classes are boring, students will dread going to your class.
