Repetition

Repetition of the subject matter also contributes to memory retention.

Yes i agree, students have to do tasks several times in lab in order to be signed off by an instructor. THis way we know they have the understand the procedure

John,

yes, repetition is a key for learning content as well as movements & methods.

Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

Absolutely! In automotive for example. Changing a tire on a tire machine is one of the best examples of repetition. After explaining and showing students the process of body motion a technician uses. It takes a learning student about ten plus times to get the proper procedure down. Love watching them get it.

Pamela,
yes & the more avenues they can use the better they will be. Write the words, concepts, etc down, then say them to yourself & review, etc.

I express to my students that it is well documented the more you say or repeat whatever it is you are wanting to learn, either through written, visual or auditory the better your chance of long term retention. That is why I tell them, repetition, repetition, repetition.

Kristin,
repetition is a very important teaching method that assists in emphasizing key points as well as assisting with retention.

I agree that if you don't repeat some students will miss the point and what they need to be successful in the course.

Deborah,
it really does help us as much as the students & as you said can really help us stay focused on what is the most important information.

Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

If we don't repeat some students will miss the whole thing. They get distracted in the class room, mid wonders, looking at other things.
Repetition helps us as well as them. All is a learning process we can share with them.

As a teacher you have to continually make sure that your students are given the best chance of
retaing the course material. Retention instead of memorization is very, very important in the todays world. Knowledge is what, as a teacher you should strive to achieve in your students. Good grades (memorization at times) may not give you knowledge, but knowledge (retention) will give you good grades

Monte,
yes, it can be frustrating at times, but like you said the repetition really is very helpful.

Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

I had a hard time with this. I don't like to repeat.Especially if I judged it as easy. I had to learn to slow down and remember that when I learn I do need things repeated. Especially when writing things down. That's what helped me. ALso added more time to class and helps people hear it twice if they are not writing it down.

Maria,
this is so true. Nothing can replace good old fashioned repetition.
