Gathering Student Evaluation and Feedback

We have precious little time with our students. Each minute is valuable for learning, but some must be budgeted for other needs. Given a class of twenty students, meeting four times for three hours, how much time would be appropriate for gathering student evaluation and feedback?

Thanks
Stephen

Mark,
these are great questions. I also like to ask what they found to be the most helpful & least helpful in regard to subjects covered, homework assignments, etc.

Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

I combine getting their feedback on the course, my teaching, the homework assignments, and the textbook, with questions like "What did you like most about this class?" and "What did you learn in this class that will be of most benefit to you in the future?"

At the end of each moduale and evaluation sheet is handed out to each student. It is put on a scantron answer sheet and submitted to the home office. No names are required the the students are quite honest and objective. It is very helpful in evaluating the course and instructor.

Cynthia,
there really are so many ways to evaluate student performance. I use a mixture of formal testing, projects & discussions to help me know if the students are really getting it.

Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

I agree with the importance of student evaluation. It really helps me see what I did right and it definitely highlights what I need to do differently to make the course more successful and relevant for the students. What methods for course evaluation have you used?

Student evaluation and feedback is important. It helps us to find out what we need to improve on, and what students think about our teaching method.

Stephen,
I would encourage consideration of some form of electronic method for gathering this information.

Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
