eye concact
with the student getting a computer for the class, it's hard to get eye contact. I try to use the tone of my voice to get eye contact. Sometimes it works
I also give them a "fair amount of handouts" and always give fewer handouts than there are students in the class.
The students ask for them as they often do not like to share and I ask for a volunteer to make the 2 or 3 missing copies and the students seem to value something that they did not have and had to ask for to recieve.
It is also key in keeping a sence of discipline in the class room. Some students get nervous when you make eye contact with them.
I imagine this must be difficult. I know I give a fair amount of handouts for my class. But, I am conscious to give them right before they are needed for lecture or at the end of class to review. Otherwise, once eyes are on the hanodouts, they quit listening. And if I don't have enough eye contact, I will simply say, "Can everyone look up please?"
try banning computer access time during class..they might revolt at first, but will get accustomed to it with time.
