This can be very helpful for the students who are really engaged in the lecture. The peer interaction is also a great tool. I really like this idea I will try this in my classes.
Walter,
That really is a great idea. You get experience presenting and the feedback from the group also.
I know we have a chapter on campus but as an instructor I am embarrassed to participate with students and other instructors.
The improvement that would be beneficial to me is to better engage the students in a course they are not very interested in. I teach a class which has no real hands on projects can be boring for students. I would like all of the students to really read the chapters and be prepared for lecture. I believe that this then would improve the interaction of the entire class.
I would like to improve my written communication skills. I've been teaching online classes and really feel I spend a lot of time reading and revising what I've written.
I'd like to eliminate all the 'Uhs...' that enter into my speech.
Reviewing this lesson has been very helpful to me.
I can see how using index cards will help me so that I'm less prone to the 'Uhs...'.
Going to run out today and go buy some packs of them!
I would like to be able to slow down my rate of speech. When I start teaching, I have a habit of speaking very quickly; I realize that makes it harder for the students to focus on what I am saying and to identify the main points. I try to remind myself to do that - and even ask the students to let me know if I am going too fast - but I am not always successful.
i have a tendency to speak to fast at time i have to police myself
I would like to improve my class participation in lecture and labs. Most students take notes during both lecture and labs but once it time to do skill work they tend to forget everything we have studied and went over. Lately, during lecture I been showing actual instruments and drawing diagrams so they can fully understand.
Hi Anne!
This is where I try to become very creative - sometimes that more difficult than others!
A few things that I have had success with. . .
Games
Dividing the material into sections and asking student groups to cleverly present the material in class
Divide students into groups and ask them to come up with a number of questions for asking the other group making it a contest
Cross word puzzles
Use childrens games for adult learning - I have had really good luck with this - students have a lot of fun
BE CREATIVE!
Keep up the good work!

Hi Eural!
Half the battle is won when you want to change and/or improve. I do encourage you not be difficult on yourself by being a perfectionist. What's important is that you do the best that you can do in all endeavors and to help others have the same approach.
Keep up the good work!

My non-verbal communication skills could use a little repair. I need to work on my poker face. You can always tell if I am happy or sad. If a student provides an answer to question that is way off point, I may give a look to them that may make them hestitate to respond. I am working on that daily. I also take with my hands, and it wasn't until I began teaching that I realized that some individuals are offended with to much gesturing.
As an instructor, I would like to improve upon my ability to convey information in a variety of ways. I utilize PowerPoints, hand outs, and lecture but I feel I could better develop my communication through examples and student assessing. By student assessing, I mean asking students to explain back to me what it is I am referencing of instruction about to better ensure retention of information.
Anne
I would like to improve all of my communication skills. Recognizing that I am, for the most part, a perfectionest. I am optimistic in my approach to develop my communication skills. I belive that there is always room for improvement.
Understanding that communication is a two-way street, I would like to improve my ability to stop lecturing and listen. I get caught up in what I find an exciting topic and may not give the students ample opportunity to reflect their excitement or lack thereof. Years ago I took a Speech Communication course at a community college to improve my delivery and help control my nervousness. It's worked well for me.
My ability to allow the students to talk. I am always impatient to get on to the next subject, because the text book and syllabus have too much content for the shorter courses in my college.
Hi Vicki!
I have a tendency to get in a hurry and have found myself losing student attention. One thing that I have done is compartmentalize my lesson plan and time it. I also plan activities to reenforce my lectures.
Keep up the good work!

I am making an efffort to slow down. I tend to move too quickly through material that seems basic and then realize that I am losing students attention. I am really working hard at slowing down, lecturing for 15-20 minutes and then assigning a hands on assignment that reinforces my lecture points. I find this helps students relate to the maaterial better and holds their interest throughout class.
Hi Anthony!
I appreciate that you are continually working on self improvement. However, I do encourage you not to measure yourself against someone else's skills but to hone your own skills. Being different is what keeps the world moving in what I believe is a positive direction.
Keep up the good work!

You have to try to learn more every day
Being able to allow the students to have problems out side of school.
