I agree that memorable experiences that relate to the material is not only interesting for the students, but also is applicable for the lesson plan. I always abegin class with soe antedote related to the material that they are studying.
As a writing instructor I am very aware that human beings like stories, and memorable examples provide the stories that make abstract ideas come to life. I'm always on the lookout for good examples of different writing techniques we discuss - for example, excellent use of metaphor, great recognizable voice, fine use of description, etc.
