Facial Expressions

I really rely on their facial expressions as I walk around the room explaining certain math formulas, etc..When it looks like someone maybe confused or might have a question and does not want to ask , I will call upon them in a non-threating way and make them part of my conversation and next thing you know I am having group discussions..!

The face and eyes tell all. I rely on that in my dictation for the students. Most often I know when material needs to be repeated just by their facial expression and or body language. So, when I see this, I usually repeat my dictation material at a slower pace to capture the comprehension of the subject matter.

Hi Felicia!

Repetition is an excellent teacher!

Keep up the good work!

I have discovered that a student's facial expression, or the lack thereof, usually indicates that they may be confused or that they may have missed some information that would help them to better understand the material. I use the opportunity to look for other ways to explain the material, repeat the material and then ask if anyone has further questions. The blank and /or confused expression usually changes to the look that indicates that he/she now understands what is being presented.

Interesting and true story...apparantely when I am concentrating real hard on a point I want to get across to my students I have a stern look on my face and the students think I am mad. This confuses them because I normally have a smile and am a very happy person. So I always tell my new students about my stern face when I am lecturing so they know ahead of time and can call me on it when it happens. So far it works.

I am excellent at reading body language & facial expressions. Eyes tell all & any issue is resolved between myself & student & they know I understand them.
