Working the room
I think that when we are not sure of the class content it is difficult to move around and work the room. Making sure there is a comfort level with the information is important for the instructor. Using different methods throughout the lecture makes it easier to move through the room.
I'll keep my notes on either a clipboard or index cards so that I can carry them with me, rather than having to go back to the front of the room all the time.
Good for you Susan!
It works well for everyone - doesn't it?
Keep up the good work!

I totally agree. When I am working the room, I notice the class gets so much more involved with what I am discussing. They get out of thier shell faster. This really has made a big difference with my classes. The day goes by so much faster and enjoyable.
I use the lectern as a home base but I do move around, walking over to the skeleton or anatomic model to demonstrate.
I always walk around the room when i am doing lecture and this does 2 things, 1st it allows me to keep an eye on all students and they do not even realize it, [comfort level from day 1] and 2nd keeps all students alert and [awake lol] and they follow me around the room. we are a Tech. school and we have alot of show and tel pass around items , this also keeps them focused.
Hi Adel!
I always like to remind instructors that working the room helps keep up on our toes as well. The better connected we are with the students the more interactive they will become.
Keep up the good work!

Hi Al!
Some really great points! Something that I do when I float is position my notes/teaching materials some place in the room where I can refer to them if necessary without being distracting.
Keep up the good work!

This also allows you to see whether or not students are taking notes, texting, figeting, having side conversations, etc. Working the room keeps their attention and keeps students in check.
I feel its so very important to work the room as you lecture to keep everyone's attention. It not only allows you to check in with students as you work the room but it also keeps their attention on the topic versus floating to other distractions. You certainly should know the topic you are teaching to allow you to walk the room comfortably or the students will notice you are nervous & they relate that to you not being prepared.
I agree that you need to know the information your teaching. It would be comoparable to a singer not knowing the song they are to sing on stage 2 minutes prior to going on.
