Voice modulation

Modulating your voice during a lecture seems to help keep students interest up.

Being a monotone was something I noticed about myself early on im my teachings. When I start a new term I let the students know this one of my shortcomings and if they notice it to speak up. Some students have and it reminds that I need to keep working on it.

It does. it is a very important training tool. I know personally my voice is very monotone. One day I recorded my voice and it sounded terrible. So I decided to add pitch and pace to my speaking. I pause, speed up, move around so that my voice module changes and this affects students interest in the subject.

I have a soft monotone voice that I am working on. I make an effort to look up and project my voice especially for key points which I also repeat. I give handouts so students can follow along.

In my teaching field, we dictate timed-material and students transcribe from their steno notes. It is imperative that we speak clearly, annunciating words properly. There are times where I experience pitch problems due to fatigue or voice loss. The good thing is that I am able to recognize when I am experiencing pitch problems and immediately try to clear my voice and speak up. When I do that, I notice that my students suddenly "wake up" or sit up and begin refocusing on what is being said.

Hi John!

Changing our pattern of presentation on a regular basis is important in keeping student interest. I use PowerPoint, whiteboard, flipchars, handouts, move around, ask for students to present portions of the lesson, etc. AND - I often use a couple of these during one class. Mixing it us is good!

Keep up the good work!
