Question Highlighting
Interesting Mod. This is the first time I am teaching a class and hope to teach it next term. I am making notes as to what works in my presentation but I can't stop the students from giving more attention to continually highlighting test questions in the book. I am at the half way mark in the class and was thinking about a discussion with the class on how/if they are learning. The exam scores are good. Should I be concerned about attention giving to highlighting if scores are good? I am more interested in making sure the students learn skills they can use at a job than just pass a test.
Hi Charles!
Exams are a necessary evil. It's the discussions, group activities, and exoerience sharing that helps students "learn skills they can use at a job". The concepts given in class should always be presented with a practical application. I am not so concerned about note taking techniques used by students as I am about their attention and class participation.
You will find the balance as time goes on and it will probably be a different balance for each class you facilitatr.
Keep up the good work!

Charles,
This particular class probably has one or two students who are requesting the highlightening of the text. Every class is different. As you learn the text you will use many other resources, and the students will learn concepts and how to apply them. My supervisors asked me to occasionally point out objective (multiple choice or fill in blanks) test questions during class discussion. Ask students to research questions and explain their answers in their own words either orally or in writing. Start introducing subjective (discussion) questions on quizes and tests. Assign committees in the classroom to research questions and report briefly to the class.
Your question is still a challenge to us even after three years.
