i think it should be a mix of high and low tones for many reasons, not to put them asleep, get their attention, size of the room, i also think that noise in the back ground like a radio helps out when they are in lab.
Hello Dennis, for me I don't want to be too loud, so that it appears that I am yelling, but not too softly where my students are having a hard time hearing me. So I usually start talking, and then ask them if everyone can hear me, and how well. It is after the students' responses, I know whether I need to stay at that pitch, talk louder, or maybe softer. So since my class is student-focused, I let them "decide".
