Disruptions during lecture

How to address distracting students while not disrupting the lecture?

I usually call that person or persons by name and say "let's stay focused so we don't miss some keypoints you will need to remember".

Hi Deborah!

Thanks for the question! Oh, I believe it is the best thing to do. But my goal is to provide "positive" reenforcement not to make an issue out of the behavior. Having said that, I casually move in that direction as we continue classroom activities and then find a way to draw that student into the activities.

I continue to believe that people will get behavioral reenforcement whether positive or negative. So it's the instructors job to turn negatives into positives. This type of student may take a little extra time, but I've found that it's worth it and typically works.

Now - if that student continues to be disruptive, you must take it to the next step and not allow them to infringe on other students't right to learning in a good environment.

Instructors have to be psychologists as well!!!

GREAT question and keep up the good work!

Jane: What do you think about going over and standing by the disruptive student, hoping s/he will discontinue?

Hi Athena!

Recently, I attached some suggested reading on a student's post that I found on the web. It suggested that disruptive students are attention seekers and we can allow them to met some of that need, all is better off.

I have found when I reenforce positive behaviors or just take a little extra time either before or after class, this type of student becomes more of a team player. But the reality is that they cannot continue to disrupt the class and you have to know you limits.

Keep up the good work!
