I like non-verbal communication. I move around so I pay attention so all my students., that way I can see if there are any needs.

It is in regards to good eye contact.
this is absulaty necessary as it engages the student and makes them feel part of the discussion. If held over 2-3 second it could be considered a "stear down" and that could have a negative effect

The most important communication skills in a diverse learning environment are assuring that there is something in the class for everyone, i.e. include text and graphics in visual material and audio. It is also important to classroom activities that include oral presentations, written assignments, and the use of pictures.

Acceptance, asking for clarifiaction when the need arises, a simple hand squeez. People w/different culture values are a bit apprehensive to express to outsiders regarding their beliefs because they have been rediculized at one time in their lifetime. If you express acceptance they will open to you & you can expect to learn something new on that day and possilbly made a friend for life.

I believe all communication skills are important. Every student responds to the various styles of communication differently. Therefore, I must be able to read my students non verbal communication in order to reach him/her. In fact, I periodically take time out of the classroom schedule and facilitate communication exercises with the class. It's a nice diversion, yet very rewarding to all.

Hi Natalie!

For those of us who are not online instructors, I don't think that we fully comprehend what skills are needed. It's taken for granted in a traditional classroom that our verbal communication and body language are most often clearly understood.

Why don't you share a few more tips for online instructing?

Thanks and keep up the good work!

The ability to connect with each student. Eye contact, and body language are important. Then you have the potential of being able to figure out thru observation what they need to help them succed. If you've made that connection you also have a better chance of helping tham by asking the question. Students who feel they don't have a connection with you sometimes give you a convienent answer to get away. Not the true answer that would be helpful.

Calm, clear engaged talk taht is inclusive of students questions

Being in the online education field, I believe my most important communication skills are effective writing and resources for the students. In the classroom, I am not able to always communicate by speaking, so I need to ensure my thoughts and concepts are explained in the most effective way. Usually this is accomplished by a “blurb” followed by a power-point or other relevant current events to aid the students in their application and understanding of the material.

The most important thing to remember is to relate to different cultures and backgrounds in your examples you share with studetns.

Hi D.A. Reid!

Absolutely! I really like all of these skills and think that they are very important to student learning outcomes. However, there is at least one other skill that I would like to remind you of - listening!

Keep up the good work!

Changes in pitch and volumn help to keepm the lister tuned in. Monotoned voices put people to sleep. Also movement and gestures make the inforamtion come alive and more easy to remember.

Being a good listener, taking time to watch and evaluate issues, and being open to different needs are key to working in a diverse learning environment. An instructor cannot be effective if he/she is not willing to learn with and from students. It's not always easy, but learning to adjust teaching styles, materials, and classroom management is part of the job. The dynamics can be exciting.

being willing to listen to students. each has a different way of understanding/assimilating material, by taking input from others, we can use the "best" ideas from each to make a better presentation.

Know your audience so persuasive skills can be utilized to influence others. Also develop effective listening and good communication skills in order to reach a common understanding and avoid confusing messages. Maintain good eye contact and convey a positive, encouraging attitude.
