Keeping Their Attention
One of the ways that I do this is by getting my students involved:) There are times in my lecture that I will stop and present Q&A. This not only allows them to become involved in my lecture it creates a sense of being part of the subject.
You might also try, having them make thier own note cards, instead of just taking notes.
I've found that there are differences between keeping students involved, maintaining their attention, keeping them entertained, and keeping them motivated. Although the line often is very gray it is necessary to try to do all of the above simultaneously at times. The use of instructional aides, games, graphics, movies, physical activity (even in lecture courses) and having the students actively engaged in their education works well. This is where the instructor must be creative, flexible, and yes, at times, entertaining. I can't recall where I've heard the term "edutainment" or even if I've heard it elsewhere or I am thinking I heard it elsewhere but just like any student, listening to any lecture or presentation or even watching TV or a Movie, entertainment is a "must" factor. With the Billions of dollars TV and the Movie industry makes, I think they are on to something we should be sure to implement in education!
