Followup Questions
One of the most effective ways I learn new material is to ask myself questions after studying the material. Chances are, if I can answer swiftly and clearly I know I got it! I do the same thing with the students.

I like to get the students to give me the answers and I can reinforce the correct answers while explaining why this is correct. I find the two way discussions help explain the concepts to all the students.
Follow up questions can really make you think, as you prepare for your class, about all the things you truly know about your subject matter that you will need to keep ready, at least in your mind, if not on handouts, for those dear follow up questions.
I heard this many years ago... If you think you know a subject, try to teach it.
