Staying Focused on Topic

It is so important to stay focused on the topic at hand. It is very easy to get pulled into another area when in open forum discussion. Staying focused but allowing the class to have some free range for discussion is sometimes a challenge.

I have actually stated to the class "Okay everyone we strayed a little from our topic. Time to refocus".

I agree. Staying on topic is essential, but I have to admit, I don't mind if we stray a little. I find it interesting where students will take a subject. I think it's good that students are able to feel comfortable in the classroom and know that the class is a safe place to express opinion. Saying that, I don't let it get out of hand and at anytime I'm able to relate the side-bar, so to speak, to the lesson of the day, I do.

I gently guide the class back to the topic by making statements such as..."that is related..or very good point; however, our focus for today is...Also, I ask leading questions that will require specific answers but still leave room for additional input from others.

I agree but getting off topic for a minute or 2 can help develop a state change for the students during a heavy lecture part of a course. This can allow them to have the information sink in and help them be ready for the next round. Although some groups don't like to stay on track. You have to get to know the group and their "signs" so you can manage it.

Hi Delores!

How do you manage a class who has strayed from topic?

Keep up the good work!
