By using memorable examples, the student is able to associate an image with a newly learned concept, and this association will promote deeper processing and easier recall/application.

David,
Absolutely, using the technique of familiarity is a great teaching method that really does help our students with the less familiar concepts.

Kimberly,
Exactly right, or they will remember what the textbook stated better because they have your story to connect the ideas to.

Dr. Ryan Meers

Mahnaz,
Yes, that connection between our examples & the content, especially the more theoretical stuff, really helps students see that this does have a purpose/impact, etc.

Memorable examples are valuable tools in assisting students in retaining information. Think about real life experiences outside of the classroom. I know I tend to remember experiences that are filled with extreme pain or extreme joy and when I share those with others I am able to express them in such a powerful way. As instructors, we can use genuineness, and even humor etc. to get the point across and students will most often remember the lesson because of the emotional presentation.

it is difficult to describe to someone something that they have never know. start with something they do know and transition that over to what you are trying to teach them

The use of memorable examples such as pictures or tangible items is important in that they do help the students understand and see what is going on. To just describe the situation may not be enough. I have found that most students are visial learners and a demonstration, picture or movie puts the situation in real time. They are able to grasp concepts better.

They can relate to the subject matter.

They may encounter a crime scene similiar to the one I worked and they will remember what to do and how to handle the scene rather than trying to remember what the textbook stated.

Using memorable examples assist students draw a parallel between the course content and personal experiences. Giving examples from life experiences facilitates mastery of the content on a personal level. The content is retained better, and students can use the new aquired knowledge in similar situations.

Elise,
You are so right. I too have found that these kind of entertaining stories are a great way to help our students remember the concepts that they need to be successful.

Dr. Ryan Meers

mario,
Yes, many times our students can learn very well from our mistakes as well as our successes.

Dr. Ryan Meers

mario,
Yes, those real life examples can be great ways of illustrating a concept in the text book or they can be great ways of demonstrating those exceptions to the rules.

Dr. Ryan Meers

Memorable examples are valuable in helping students remember course content because they awaken or capture their interests as great stories, while serving as reinforcers of concepts which makes it easier for them to retain the information.

While we do remember things based on repetition, we remember things more fully when associated with an emotion or action. Using funny (or serious) anecdotes in association with course content therefore allows the student to connect real-life to course material. I have had students tell me that they even write down certain actions I do in class to the material I was teaching and it helped them remember the point of that illustration. Hand gestures, facial expressions, connecting the complex to the simple and emotion-based examples all help them learn and remember - so, BE AN ACTOR.

i am a auto instructor and use examples from when i had my own shop. One of them is letting the car owner diag. the problem instaed of the tech.doing it.And how it can affect the out come if the owner is wrong and now doesnt want to pay for the repairs, allways check out the car yourself

i belive that reality doesnt always follow text book rule and examples confirm it

Jacqulin,
Absolutely! These experiences, whether from the instructor or other students are great opportunities for the students to connect the learning to something real & tangible.

Dr. Ryan Meers

With the use of examples both from students and instructor, students tend to remember and relate more to the concept taught.
