Application-based instruction

Application-based Instruction in which students themselves provide examples of their own experiences is an effective way to capture and maintain students' attention.

Charles,
these can be truly beneficial learning experiences as the group contributes & you also know that they are definitely engaged with the subject.

Some of the most effective lectures I have had in my class have come from asking one student about "what they think" and once they give me their ideas or expericences then another student will chime in and we begin a discussion on the topic based on each students life experience and how they apply it to the subject. By doing this all of us come away with a better understanding of the subject matter. I always learn something from my students in every phase I teach. I value their knowledge as much as they do mine.

Kundukisa,
Yes, I have found success with this approach as well.
