Eye Contact

This has been very effective for me to check if students appear engaged in the lecture.

Eye to eye contact engages student to pay attention to the speaker or instructor; it is also an excellent way to assess the learning of the student, it can be seen in the eyes.

Joseph,

you are right that this can be a great way to determine if students are understanding or have questions.

some of my students are hesitant to ask me questions at times, I find that making eye contact is a invaluable tool to see where exactly the student stands. With a majority of the cirriculm being hands on, this simple technique helps the student enourmously

I also use eye contact for class management. The students know my expectations, so if someone is distracting the class, a look into the eyes with the appropriate facial expression solves the problem in a quick peaceful way.

Joyce,
yes the eyes really are a great way to encourage the more reserved students to feel safe.

Making and maintaining good eye contact has proven helpful to me in the classroom with students that are shy. I can engage them and encourage them even if they tend not to out spoken.

N.,
it really is a great little check in that can be done without disruption.
