The key is to make eye contact without looking like you are trying to look into their souls.

Yes one of the tricks I use is to look at a point on a wall which is in the vicinity of their eye level. this way i can see them yet i do not appear to be staring at them.

Eye contact is very important. I do agree with the modules 2-3 seconds is long enough for eye contact unless you need to use eye contact to change the mood or demeanor of the class. It can be used to curb behavior without the need for verb cues.
