recap
Doing a recap on the days previous lesson is a good way to get the students in a learning mode, to begin the days lesson.
Also for the sake of repetition
Thank you! I fail to do this more than I care to admit. I am pretty good at wrapping up the day with a recap and then talking about what to expect for tomorrow, but I rarely start the new day talking about key concepts discussed the previous day. Typically Monday is lecture and then the rest of the week lab. That first day of Lab is a great opportunity to hit the key points one more time before we begin to practice. I will start today :)
I also look for trends in the student's lab work. I go over the questions that the students did not answer correctly. The students like doing their lab work so I have found this works great to start the class off with.
oriole,
yes the recap is a great way to help cement the learning & connect the new concepts to what they've already learned.

This is a must in my classes, it tells me how much the students remember from the last class because I recap with questions.
It is also a good way to spend 10 minutes waiting on the late students. Late students miss the recap, but don't miss the current lecture.
Ronna,
the recap/review is a great way to help students stay connected with the material & see how it all connects.

I have found that not only does recapping the previous lecture helps but so does giving at least 10 minutes of each class time to recap that days lecture. This has allowed for the students to get clarification on a topic at the end of the class. I have found that some students have questions at the end of class but forget to ask the next day!
Rachel,
yes, this recapping or reviewing is a great way to emphasize the key ideas/parts & to help everyone reengage.

I also believe in recapping. In recapping, students are able to display that they have payed attention and learned material from previous lectures. It allows them to feel good about their knowledge base prior to covering new material. It can also be a wake up call for those who cannot keep up with the responses their classmates are giving. Lastly, it gives me a chance to recognize areas I didn't cover well enough. I can then review that concept and get the class on the same page.
