Eye Contact

Eye contact is important and welcoming for students. When students are in the classroom, they need to feel that the instructor recognizes who they are.

Donna,
yes eye contact is a powerful tool, but as you point out we want to make sure that we don't make our students feel uncomfortable or awkward.

Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

I find that eye contact can be a great tool if applied properly. I think the 3 to 5 second rule is a must otherwise, my students think I am singling them out. Some students never look up from their books or papers giving me the impression they do not want to be engaged in the class discussion nor do they want to be called on to participate.
