Eye Contact

People definitely say more with their eyes than their mouths and I have found eyes are a very accurate tell about how well a student understands the subject matter.

Melissa,
I am a big believer in strong eye contact, not staring down my students, but letting them know that I am listening to them, they are part of the class & that I care about their success.

Eye contact is very important. It shows the student that you are listening to what they have to say as well as giving them your attention.

the eye contac is also important to let the student know that you care about their body language.

agreed, i've found eye contact and small gestures from students to be easy indicators for how they are receiving the class material as i give it to them. also helps determine which students are with you and which are "some place else".

lori,
yes, this is such a powerful & quick way to read the entire class & reengage those who need it & to help those who may have questions.

It is amazing to me how much power eye contact holds. By making and holding eye contact with the students for just a couple of seconds, you really get a picture of how much they are comprehending, but also if they are paying attention. Students who are not paying attention instantly look guilty when eye contact is made. I am easily tipped off to the students who may need a little more motivation.
