I have found during a lecture that if I repeat key points at various times it helps the students to retain those points. I often wrap up my class by posing key questions that cause the students to have to state those points which I have mentioned several times during the lecture.
Sharon,
this is a great technique & the repetition is a great way to aid in their retention. I use a phrase: "If I were writing the test, I would probably ask about ..."

I have found repeating key points tend to get their attention. In addition, I have students hightlight the information in their text. I will sometimes add noise of some sort when repeating a key point. For example, I may knock on the desk or tap my foot. These sounds with the repeating and phrases such as, "this is important", " you will see this again" tend to capture students' attention. They seem to respond well and feel confident that they can prepare for the future exam or quiz.
Deborah,
this is so true & one that we often forget. The repetition helps with memory & also is a big sign to the student that she should pay attention to this.

This is good, because we say of lot of things in a lecture and since the student usually not familiar with what they may need to know in the future or for tests it really is our responsibility to help them keep focused on the all inportant and most important things. So repeation to important for retention.
Do you highlight these key points as well? Or write them on the board, or attatch a visual with them to provide further retention?
Repeating key points signal to the students that they are important. It makes it easier for the students to remember them and it gives them focus on their reading.
