when beginning a lecture, it is important for the instructor to manipulate the entire classroom and make eye contact as much as possible
Megan,
this is also a great way to get them prepped for the topic of the day or content. I like to throw a question out to them to discuss that pertains to the current topic & then they are more ready to learn.

Hello! I also like to have my students talk to one another in the beginning of lecture to show that the classroom is more of a community than a lecture hall.
Megan
Sean,
a little thing I like to do is start with a quick stand-up question that pertains to the topic of the day. They have to stand up & find someone in a different part of the room & each person takes about a minute answering the question I pose to the other person. It gets them moving & thinking about the topic.

I like to do a quick exercise before I give a lecture just to rouse the students senses. Not even necessarily about the subject at hand. I just find it wakes everyone up and increases their attention spans.
