Engaging student

I find it critical that the first day of class to engage students with not only myself but with each other to make it an open environment. The more comfortable that they feel with the environment the more comfortable they will feel when answering questions asked during the course.

Patricia,
this is a great idea as it helps build community & can also help inspire some of the more reluctant students when they hear the expectations of the more engaged students.

Chelsea,

I agree with you and do the same thing with my students. We have an ice breaker exercise for fun, then we have student introductions and what the student hopes to gain from the class. Then I make my formal introduction. Most students are excited about the class after this.

Chelsea,
yes, the students should feel comfortable with the instructor & one another as you said as this greatly helps with the discussions/learning moving forward.
