Movement through the classroom effective?
Moving around the classroom is important however is it really productive to roam the entire classroom? Many times I was in class and I could not concentrate on what the instructor was saying due to the literal pain in my neck trying to look at the instructor in the back of the class room, making it difficult to take notes. My solution to this is turn the class into a semi circle if possible. All eyes would be on the instructor regardless where they are in the room and also gives all students the ability to take notes without shifting to watch the instructor.
I believe that movement around the classroom is effective because students are paying attention. I feel that if they are not paying attention or falling asleep, then the simple standing next to student, will make them become aware and focus more.
Peter,
I think a good balance is important. The semi-circle or horseshoe is the best shape as it promotes better discussion. However, most of my classrooms have fixed seats so it's not an option. In those instances, I do try to move around, but as much as possible stay to the front of most of my students.
