student groups

I always establish student groups, generally three groups of 6 to 10 students, for class size of 18 t0 30 students. these groups are for the most part utilized in conjunction with simulated practical hands on field represenative projects. competition between the assigned groups creates an enthusiasam not exhibited in normal classroom activities. every student within the individual groups are obligated to belly up to the bar and participate at the level they are capable of.

I agree, placing a shy student with a stronger student- ie. one with experience works great.

I will use groups/teams when working on a fairly large assignment.
The students enyoy this and the results are quite satisfactory.
This also necessitates the monitoring of groups and moving around the classroom.

Hi Hope! Thanks so much for your comments! It is particularly interesting that you utilize the same groups or teams throughout the course. It seems as if that would go beyond just the completion of assignemnts and projects and, over time, would take on the characteristic of a small learning community. I'm curious, what other advantages have you seen through keeping students in the same group over a period of time? Are there challenges?

I love using student groups. I like to keep the same groups going through the course, and they work well for me.

I find that the students look forward to group work, and it does allow them all to participate.

I enjoyed reading this topic.

It is a good way to get the shy students to interact with each other. So that they dont feel left out of what is happing in class.

I also agree. The students that are shy tend to relate better with their peers

I agree Michele, I too find that the shy students are more willing to participate in a group setting.

the best way to integrated shy student and make them participated.

Hi Raymond! As you mentioned, student learning groups are excellent for hands-on projects and activities. I too have utilized competitions between groups on certain activities. I would be interested to know more about how you have used competition in the classroom or lab.

Thanks!
