Balance

When forming student learning groups the instructor has to be careful that he or she does not over load the group with the better students. while seeking diversity one must be aware that everyone has to participate.

Students are told at the beginning of class if there is a group project everyone is expected to participate, as a percentage of their grades depends on participation. They are reminded that they all start my class with an "A" and their participation, professionalism and clinical skills determines their final grade.(My students are dental assistants).

Hi Alphia!

So how do you grade a student who is not expected to participate when that is part of group work?

Keep up the good work!

Delivery strategies as group or forming teams in the classroom are designed so students can learn effectively both as individuals and as a group. Shy students are generally motivated to be themselves in a group setting and tend to participate more. At the same time do not force students to participate if they are uncomfortable.

A group assignment should therefore take place after the instructor has had time to assess individuals' abilities, while still maintaining diversity, say, during the third class, rather than the first or even sceond class meeting.

Assignments should be very clear so all feel able to participate and remain balanced in the group.
