Are pop quizzes good?

I think pop quizes keeps them on their toes.

CHARLENE,
you make some great points here. I think also the pop quizzes can help them realize what they have learned & where they have gaps. Sometimes preparing for a quiz means they just looked at bold terms & got lucky, pop quizzes generally truly test their knowledge.

I actually like using pop quizzes with my students because I believe it solidifies information recently learned (such as over the time of 2 - 4 classes). Usually students do fairly well on pop quizzes since it is on material newly learned: This success, small as it may seem, serves to create confidence in the student. Without a tool like this, students often cannot be objective about whether or not they are learning. Holding a successfully completed short quiz in their hand is sometimes the tangible proof they need that they are indeed learning afterall!

Hi Kimberly!

Quizzes are a part of the learn, repeat, repeat, review process. They are also very good review tools for tests.

Good job!

I think pop quizzes can be good, but I would let students know from the beginning of the course that they may have at least one of them. Also, I would be careful how much grade weight I put on them - enough so students take them seriously, but not so much as to discourage a struggling student.

I think POP quizzes are a great tool to keep students on cue, and ready for any given question or situation. POP quizzes should keep the student on track and prevent the student form falling behind or putting away a subject that is already learned, move on to the next and not re-visited.

Hi Teresa!

I totally agree! Nothing in a classroom should be tied to punishment. The learning environment should positive and invites students to learn.

Keep up the good work!

I do not think pop quizzes should be given as a punishment. Pop Quizzes should be given as re-inforement to solidify what the student has learned.

Hi Teresa!

I am curious why pop quizzes should be given as a punishment?

Thanks,

Pop quizzes are a good way instil confidence in students. Pop quizzes should be given as a punishment, rather to enhance their kmnowledge.

I believe pop quizzes keep students on their toes. It shows them that they need to be studying as we go along, not just for exams. And shows them different things that are important.

I like pop quizes. To me they measure the effectiveness of my teaching. I am able to gauge the amount of information my students retain during my lectures and demonstrations. I think pop quizes are great but they should not have a huge amount of points that could sway a letter grade. Thanks

Hi Yolanda!

I use pop quizzes as a significant part of student's grades. Quizzes provide immediate feedback on topics to be learned. Then if they study for exams from those quizzes, they are more likely to pass.

Keep up the good work!

I think that pop quizzes are good because by asking basic questions within the chapters will give you the necessary feed back on whether the students read the assigned chapters. A majority of student come to class un prepared, and get upset when you call on them for answers, and that feed back tells me that they did not read the chapters.

I DO BELIEVE THEY HELP STUDENT TO RECALL THE INFORMATION THEIR HAVE JUST HEARD AND SEE HOW MUCH OF IT THEY CAN REMEMBER,ITS A FORM OF REPETITION.

There is nothing wrong with giving a pop quiz. I tend to refer to the pop quiz as a "challange". It gives a picture of what is actually being retained. It is not used as a punishment.

I agree. I learned the hard way trying to use a pop quiz as punishment. I was actually upset with myself for not having total control of my class. It was not their fault that there is only one of me and 20 of them.

Sometimes definitely yes, not as punishment, but to actually know who is "awake and participating" as opposed to those that are just 'attending' because they are required to be there.

I think it depends on the reason for the quiz. If used as an assessment tool and not as punishment I think they can be a valuable teaching tool.
