Group work assignments

Group assignments are very effective. The students are learning how to communicate with each other and understand what contribution will be necessary in finishing a project. They also keep each other in check to be on top of their responsibilities.

I also like the company approach - it makes it more relevant for them when they are filling a professional job role and makes the division of labor more realistic and usually fairly even. It also seems to keep members more accountable to a portion that is vital to the whole as they all have a dfferent distinct role.

Hi Shantana!

I agree - group work is a very interesting process and if the group gels, excellent outcomes are attained. I like your "Company" approach. The approach addresses the real world of work.

Keep up the good work!

I enjoy forming groups for detailed projects and letting them work as a "Company" to get it done. You get to see minds in action and also clear leaders and followers will emerge.

You can also ask each student what they personally contributed to the group.

From my lecture class experiences, there will almost always be a heirarchy in the groups.
Some spokesperson(s), a recorder-secretary, and
support folks. These roles expedite completing
the initiative of the assignment.

That can definitely be a problem, you have to ask student's to provide feedback as to how the group is progressing and if changes need to be made.

The problem that I have had in the past is that when you assign group assignments, it seems that only 1-2 are really participating and the others are letting them do the work.
