Organizing students into groups ensures students participation.

Organizing students into groups helps students who would not ordinarily participate in class discussions to participate. Group participation would possibly help the shy student or the one that does not have the self-confidence he or she should have.

I usually have the class count off by numbers to form the groups. I either use different numbers or start at a different section of the class. This way,the students have the opportunity to work with different classmates rather than the same ones or the student groups that like to stick together.

Patricia,
groups really do help the students to open up & learn how to convey their ideas too.

Students feel more comfortable working with their peers and interacting as a group, especailly shy or students that lack confidence.

When working in the Lab environment, I assign team tasks of groups 6 (2 tables). This allows them to work as a team and help one another.

Patricia,
this is definitely a great advantage to using small groups in our classes as it helps students learn these important concepts.

Everyone has input and value to contribute to the group and no one person is singled out.
