how do i know how to put in what groups
how do i know if they are in the right groups
Laura,
great advice here. I think the important thing to remember is that groups are not a chance for us to just sit back & relax, but we must still be engaged as the instructors.

Kenny,
I completely agree with your philosophy. Our students must learn to appreciate the diversity that comes with unplanned groups & learn how to work with them.

You will know because there will be learning and interacting going on. If they are discussing their personal lives you have to redirect them. Walk around and observe the groups.
I like to explain groups this way: when they are in the field, they will not get to pick who they work with, so they need to learn to deal with and work with all kinds of people. When I create groups, I will sometimes put people together who I know might not be best of friends. It forces them to adapt to get the job done.
